I love discovering new expressive and creative ways to look at fashion and how we perceive a growing awareness of the somewhat 'throwaway' society we live in.
As my career is in vintage clothing, I'm a firm believer in recycling garments and giving fashion multiple lives and meaning
I was therefore delighted to view a pop up exhibit called "15" down the road from our boutique today, led by graduating fashion studies student Katy Bray.
The concept behind "15" is this is the average number of garments thrown away per person each year - and developing the notion of waste as a form of inspiration instead.
The exhibit displays 15 possessions most treasured by 15 different people, and reminds us that each item is worthy of its own frame like a piece of individual art, often lost amongst 'over-stuffed and under-used closets.'
Also displayed was a striking dress made of parachutes and a side counter constructed of up cycled items presented in a chic all white panel to further highlight how unwanted 'things' can serve a purpose - and a beautiful one at that!
The project hopes to progress this philosophy by developing "15" into an ethical and original brand sold in a fashion conscious and individual shop.
I look forward to seeing more from "15" in the future!
